Some women unfortunately do get complications like the pelvic inflammatory disease from having Chlamydia. It doesn’t happen to all, but it is a possibility. It is also difficult to predict a timeline – some women develop PID within a month of contracting Chlamydia whilst others can endure years of Chlamydia without any PID. PID if contracted must be addressed soon because it could spread to cervix, uterus and Fallopian tubes and can even render the woman infertile.

Is the unborn child in danger if mother has chlamydia?

Chlamydia in pregnant women can cause premature delivery and ectopic pregnancy in some cases. There is no clear evidence of chlamydia harming the fetus directly. But the study in this area remains controversial. While most studies conclude that there is no correlation between chlamydia and abortions, the odd study has documented Chlamydia trachomatis in pregnant women to cause first trimester abortions. It is for this reason that pregnant women are tested with a DNA probe. Doxycycline and tetracycline are effective but they have contraindications with pregnancy – so the usual course of treatment is often Azithromycin 1g.
