Building trust in a relationship is one of the keys to long-term happiness and success. Trust is the most important building block in a stable relationship, and without it most partnerships will dissolve over time. No matter how much you love someone, if you don’t trust them your relationship will be rocky.
Establishing trust in a relationship is the responsibility of both parties, and there are five key behaviors that will almost always help to establish trust in a relationship:
Establishing Trust in a Relationship Key #1 – Honesty
Honesty is the true key to establishing trust in a relationship. All successful relationships – whether they are professional, friendly or romantic – require truth between the people involved. It is fruitless to proceed in any relationship where honesty is not of the utmost importance. A relationship without truth is destined to fail, and lying is the fastest way to destroy any relationship.
Establishing Trust in a Relationship Key #2 – Communication
One of the best ways to maintain honesty in every relationship is to maintain effective communication. The only way one person can truly get to know and trust another is by communicating, and this is done in a number of different ways. Obviously talking is a major form of communication, and it is one of the best ways to develop trust in a relationship. We communicate in many other ways, including: attitudes, body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. Always keep in mind that your communication goes far beyond just what you are saying.
Establishing Trust in a Relationship Key #3 – Be Trustworthy
You cannot expect anyone to trust you if you aren’t trustworthy. One of the quickest ways to obtain and keep trust in a relationship is to gain another’s trust first. This is done by keeping your word, being reliable and even predictable. When trying to earn trust in a relationship, it is always a good idea to exhibit all of the characteristics you look for in someone you would trust.
Establishing Trust in a Relationship Key #4 – Be Trusting
I know it can be difficult, but you can’t even being to have trust in a relationship if you do not trust your partner. The best way to be trusting in another is to be open about the way you feel and communicate when you have a problem. If a situation arises where your trust may be faltering, don’t sit back and stew in your own juices. Speak up, get your feelings out in the open and you will gradually begin to develop a level of trust.
Establishing Trust in a Relationship Key #5 – Match Words With Actions
Always remember that actions speak louder than words. Whenever the way a person acts does not agree with the words they say, trust in a relationship will begin to crumble. Obviously, words are important, but actions frequently get more notice and pull more weight when it comes to relationships, especially the long-term, romantic variety. Words and behavior that don’t match are confusing and quickly diminish trust in a relationship.
